Information on grants and programmes available to community groups

Youth Arts Development Award 2007 The aim of the Youth Arts Development Award is to encourage the formation of partnerships between relevant agencies
and organisations at local level. Up to €20,000 will be awarded to each successful application. Applications are invited from, Community Development organisations, Local Authority, Art organisation/venue, Educational institution, Business Corporation other. It will fund a fixed period of research and or development towards the establishment of long-term, sustainable youth arts programmes at

Publications Grants from Citizen Information Board. The Publications Grants Scheme supports voluntary organisations with an information dissemination role to meet specific publication needs. Small grants are available ranging from €254 to €3000. Publications are generally part funded. Vodafone and Conservation Volunteers Ireland Nature Fund aims to encourage the appreciation and protection of Ireland’s unique natural environment through the funding of locally-based environmental projects and initiatives. Applications should clearly show an understanding of the importance of preserving our natural environment, and an outline of how your project will help enhance and protect it. Eligible projects should include: waste recycling, education and awareness raising, habitat protection, community based programmes, research, and wildlife conservation and restoration projects. The One Foundation Small Grant Scheme is a philanthropic foundation, whose mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people – children, minority communities and people with mental health problems in Ireland. Grants awarded will range from €1,000 to €20,000. Awarded based on ability to demonstrate: Good practice, Innovation, A model that can be replicated, and Policies and Strategies for increasing accessibility, promoting access. This funding must be used to support and promote the inclusion of minority children and young people into the on-going activities of child and youth serving organisations. Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust funding for Ireland Aims to fund work which will contribute to the ongoing development of a just and peaceful society in the island of Ireland. The Trust is interested in funding work which:

  • Addresses the root causes of violence and injustice, rather than alleviating symptoms.
  • Projects which cannot be funded from other sources and
  • Are likely to make a long-term, strategic difference.

ST. Stephen’s Green Trust meets 4 times a year to assess applications for grants varying from €500 to €15000. Grants are awarded for working in the following areas;

Those affected by homelessness, Offenders, Refugees and Asylum Seekers and Migrant Workers, Travellers, Evangelisation and Lay Formation, Those Effected by Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Those Effected by Hearing Impairments, Palliative Care and Community Development including Relief of Poverty. Community and Voluntary Grant Scheme The Programme of grants for locally-based Community and Voluntary Organisations for the refurbishment of facilities has no closing date. Community Funding Available Under the “Adopt a Bank” Scheme. Kilkenny County Council wishes to invite applications from local community groups in relation to “Adopt A Bottle Bank” Scheme 2007. This scheme is aimed at encouraging community groups to manage/maintain the bring centres on behalf of the Council. Greener Homes Scheme Grant The Greener Homes Scheme Grant from €300 to €6,500 is now available and provides assistance to homeowners who intend to purchase a new renewable energy heating system for either a new or existing home. Renewable Heat Deployment Programme (ReHEAT) Under this programme grants are available for the use of qualifying renewable heat systems such as boilers fuelled by wood chips and or wood pellets, solar thermal systems and heat pumps. This programme will provide assistance towards heating systems in industrial, commercial, public and community premises in Ireland. Community Support for Older People. The Scheme for the Community Support of Older People aims to improve the security and social support of vulnerable older people in their homes by providing grants for:

  • Window locks, door locks and door chains designed to strengthen points of entry to the dwellings.
  • Security lighting.
  • The once-off cost of installing socially monitored alarm systems.
  • Smoke alarms.
  • Emergency lighting for qualifying older people living on offshore islands.
    Applications will be taken from the following relating to this:
  • Voluntary or Community based organisations working with or providing support for older people can apply to participate in this Scheme.
  • The organisation should be well established in their local area and must be able to demonstrate in their application a track record of voluntary and community activity.

Citizens Information Board Group Insurance Scheme for Voluntary Service Organisations: Any voluntary organisation or community group involved in providing a social service can avail of this scheme. Organisations need to complete an Affiliation Form and Proposal Form that meet the criteria of membership of Citizens Information Board Group Insurance Scheme. Conference on Integration and Embracing Diversity (September 14th and 15th 2007) The conference is organised by AkiDwA and will be held in the Royal Dublin Hotel. AkiDwA is a national network for African women living in Ireland. It mission is to promote equality for migrant women living in Ireland in order to ensure positive change and social justice. Disability Payment – Extra Benefits and work Options. A workshop hosted by Citizens Information Board will be held in the Glenroyal Hotel, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, 20th of September. The aim of the course is to provide participants with accurate information on the entitlements of those who are sick or disabled. The course will use practical case studies to explore the eligibility criteria and work options. Empowering Young People through Quality Youth Services (October 6th 2007) This is a national conference for the youth work sector, it is organised by Youth Work Ireland, 20 Lower Dominick Street Dublin 1. www.youthworkireland.ie or phone 01 8729933. It will be held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel Conference Centre, Santry, Dublin 1.

Positive Ageing Week takes place nationally from the 28th of September to 6th of October 2007. A schedule of events will be published nearer the time. The aim of the week is to:

  • Increase awareness of ageing matters in Ireland.
  • Highlight the work of Age Action.
  • Promote cooperation and support between other community, voluntary and private sector groups.

Give it a Swirl Day 2007: The first National day of volunteering in Ireland. Will be held on 26th of September 2007.

Service Provision for People with Disabilities – A Roadmap towards 2016 (Oct 16th and 17th in Kilkenny) This annual conference is organised by CNESTA and will be held in the Newpark Hotel Kilkenny. It will cover such areas as: Rehabilitative Training, Vocational Training, Special Education, Sheltered Occupational Services, Inclusive Employment, Accreditation and Standards, Quality Assurance Requirements, and Stakeholder Consultation. Postcards from the Edge 2: Your artistic contribution required. Kilkenny County Council Arts Office will launch an exhibition in 2007 consisting of a minimum of 5,000 pieces of art. Everyone is invited to submit works of art in any medium – draw, paint, sculpt, stitch, write, photographs, create collages, print, knit, sew, your options are endless. Individual artists, groups, schools, writers, photographers, sculptors, musicians, embroiderers, mothers, granddads, babies, fathers, dancers, county councillors can submit as many pieces as they like. Star Awards of adult learning projects. The STAR awards is about showcasing teamwork and awarding recognition it’s about acknowledging the fantastic work being done by adult learning projects throughout the country.   • Performance: Designed as an introduction to actor training for amateur actors, this course is a first step for those who would like to try out or experience acting before investing in further study or training in the area.
  • Directing: An introduction to the basics of directing for theatre.
  • Spanish: Offers beginners a thorough grounding in the Spanish Language and an introduction to the culture of Spain and Latin America.
  • Creative Writing for Publication: A practical introduction to writing fiction and creative non-fiction for publication.

Organic Gardening Courses Oracle Organic Farm in Nurney, Carlow are offering short term courses in Organic Gardening throughout the summer. Diploma in Social Integration and Enterprise for Community Development Workers by distance learning.
