Information on grants and programmes available to community groups
Vodafone Ireland Foundation Grant 2007 Vodafone Ireland Foundation is motivated by the principle of “hand up, not a hand out”. They have funding available to assist programmes or projects targeting young people, children and their families. All project supported by the Vodafone Ireland Foundation should to improve life for children and young people who are, affected by economic, geographic, educational or social disadvantage. Growing up in care, the “new” Irish, unaccompanied minors, traveller children, are living in lone parent families, living with special needs or growing up in poverty. National Lottery Grants 2007 The Health Service Executive has been allocated National Lottery Funding for distribution to community based groups and voluntary organisations. The applications are invited from those groups providing health and personal social services for once off funding for viable projects which can be completed within a reasonable period of time. For further information contact your Local Heath Offices, or ring 056 7784600 or 052 77254. The closing date for applications is 22nd of June 2007.
Support to National Organisations in the Community and Voluntary Sector The Community and Voluntary Supports Division of the Department of Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs; have issued a call for applications from the Community and Voluntary sector and groups who operate at a national level. Regional or local groups are not eligible. Groups should:
- Have a focus on disadvantage and provide key services to disadvantaged target groups.
- Have a proven track record.
- Provide value for money.

Development Education Grant Scheme The funding is aimed at voluntary organisations and educational bodies for grants for development education projects, which are designed to increase awareness and understanding of development issues. Recreational Capital Fund Grants 2007 the aim of this scheme is to provide groups within the community and voluntary sector with a capital fund. The type of project eligible for support could include development of open spaces walks/parkland, playgrounds, sports facilities, arts projects and projects that conserve the built and natural heritage of the county. Major enhancement or upgrades to existing facilities will also be considered. The Recreation Grant will cover 50% of the project cost up to a maximum of €100,000. The minimum project cost of €20,000 will apply. Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust funding for Ireland Aims to fund work which will contribute to the ongoing development of a just and peaceful society in the island of Ireland. The Trust is interested in funding work which:
- Addresses the root causes of violence and injustice, rather than alleviating symptoms.
- Projects which cannot be funded from other sources and Are likely to make a long-term, strategic difference.

ST. Stephen’s Green Trust meets 4 times a year to assess applications for grants varying from €500 to €15000. Grants are awarded for working in the following areas;
Those affected by homelessness, Offenders, Refugees and Asylum Seekers and Migrant Workers, Travellers, Evangelisation and Lay Formation, Those Effected by Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Those Effected by Hearing Impairments, Palliative Care and Community Development including Relief of Poverty. Community and Voluntary Grant Scheme The Programme of grants for locally-based Community and Voluntary Organisations for the refurbishment of facilities has no closing date. Artist in the Community Scheme 2007 The Arts Council offers grant to enable artists and communities, work together on projects. The scheme covers all art forms. The Artist in the community scheme is managed by Create, the national development agency for collaborative arts. There are two phases;
- Phase two, Project realisation, for which there is a maximum fund of €5,000 available deadline 29th June 2007.

Community Funding Available Under the “Adopt a Bank” Scheme. Kilkenny County Council wishes to invite applications from local community groups in relation to “Adopt A Bottle Bank” Scheme 2007. This scheme is aimed at encouraging community groups to manage/maintain the bring centres on behalf of the Council. Greener Homes Scheme Grant The Greener Homes Scheme Grant from €300 to €6,500 is now available and provides assistance to homeowners who intend to purchase a new renewable energy heating system for either a new or existing home. Community Support for Older People. The Scheme for the Community Support of Older People aims to improve the security and social support of vulnerable older people in their homes by providing grants for:
- Window locks, door locks and door chains designed to strengthen points of entry to the dwellings.
- Security lighting.
- The once-off cost of installing socially monitored alarm systems.
- Smoke alarms.
- Emergency lighting for qualifying older people living on offshore islands.
Applications will be taken from the following relating to this:
- Voluntary or Community based organisations working with or providing support for older people can apply to participate in this Scheme.
- The organisation should be well established in their local area and must be able to demonstrate in their application a track record of voluntary and community activity.

Farm Plastic Recycling This new scheme has set farm plastic recycling targets of 55% for 2008 and 60% thereafter. Instructions on how to get involved can be obtained by contacting olga.broderick@kilkennycoco.ie or 056 7794470.
Friendly tournament promoting friendship and enjoyment. An international 5-a-side Soccer Tournament will be held in Carrick United FC – Astro Turf pitches on Sunday 10th of June from 2.00pm to 5.00pm. Further information from david.lenane@fai.ie or call David at 086 3864535.

Mullinavat Vintage Show South Kilkenny – This year is the first year that such an event has been organised in Mullinavat. It will take place on Sunday 8th of July commencing at 1.00pm. It will include a number of different vintage exhibits, a dog show, and activities for the children. Funds raised will go to local charities, for further information contact Fergus at 051 898820.
Positive Ageing Week takes place nationally from the 28th of September to 6th of October 2007. A schedule of events will be published nearer the time.
Training programmes.
Organic Gardening Courses Oracle Organic Farm in Nurney, Carlow are offering short term courses in Organic Gardening throughout the summer. The courses are run on a Saturday and different aspects of organic growing are covered each day. The tutor is an experienced grower and teacher. For further information contact Grace at 087 9358148.
Part-time flexible courses are available at Kilkenny Campus (NUI Maynooth) including the BA in Community Studies and Local Studies. Applications are currently being accepted for the BA with an information night being held in the College on Wednesday 9th of May at 7.30pm. Building for Children – Conference organised a network of Childcare Committees, including Kilkenny County Childcare Committee and South Tipperary County Childcare Committee. The conference hopes to stimulate ideas while thinking about a fresh way to build facilities for children. The conference will take place on the 6th and 7th of June in Lyrath Estate Hotel, Kilkenny. Insurance for community and Voluntary groups: The wheel will hold a series of briefing sessions around the country on Insurance and Arachas Insurance will attend these sessions. Sessions will be held at Carmelite Centre Aungier Street Dublin 2 on 7th of June from 1030am to 12.00pm and in the Ambassador Hotel, Cork, on 27th of June from 6.00pm to 7.30pm. Summer School- Conflict and Consensus: Assumptions, Values and Roles in the Irish Non-profit Sector organised by the Centre for Non-profit Management in Trinity College. It will take place on Thursday 21st of June 2007, in Trinity IMI Graduate School of Management, Sandyford, Dublin 16. Facilitating Change: Designing Collaborative Action for Organisations and Communities. A training course which takes place on the 19th, 20th and 21st of June in the National Youth Federation in Dublin, is a three day workshop which will teach participants to leverage the skills and commitment of all stakeholders involved by providing you with the strategies and tools for designing, managing and participating in partnerships or change efforts.
